Dado Joint Calculator
Standard Dado Joint
Calculate dado dimensions for shelving
Formula
Dado Width = Shelf Thickness | Dado Depth = Panel Thickness / 3 | Passes = ceil(Width / Bit Diameter)
Frequently Asked Questions
How deep should a dado be?
A dado should typically be 1/3 the thickness of the material it is cut into. For 3/4 inch plywood, the dado should be about 1/4 inch deep.
Why is plywood not exactly 3/4 inch?
Modern plywood is often slightly undersized (23/32 inch). Use a router with a straight bit and guide for a perfect-fitting dado rather than a 3/4 inch dado blade.
