Dowel Spacing Calculator
Edge Joint Dowels
Calculate dowel spacing for edge-to-edge glue-ups
Formula
Num Dowels = floor((Length - 2) / Spacing) + 1 | Hole Depth = Diameter x 4 | Max Diameter = Thickness / 2
Frequently Asked Questions
What size dowel should I use?
Use a dowel diameter no more than half the thickness of the thinnest board being joined. For 3/4 inch stock, use 3/8 inch or smaller dowels.
How deep should dowel holes be?
Drill each hole about 4 times the dowel diameter deep. For 3/8 inch dowels, drill about 1.5 inches deep on each side. Leave a small gap for excess glue.
