Frequently Asked Questions

What is the leap year rule?
A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, EXCEPT years divisible by 100 are NOT leap years, UNLESS they are also divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not.
Why do we have leap years?
Earth's orbit around the sun takes approximately 365.2422 days. Without leap years, our calendar would drift about 1 day every 4 years, and seasons would eventually shift. Leap years keep the calendar aligned with Earth's orbit.
When is the next leap year?
Leap years occur every 4 years. Recent leap years: 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032. The exception is century years not divisible by 400.
