Enclosure by Species

Formula

Minimum enclosure size based on species-specific guidelines. General snake rule: enclosure length + width >= snake length. Lizard rule: enclosure length >= 2x animal length. Additional animals add ~50% to length. Always provide a temperature gradient and appropriate humidity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big should a bearded dragon enclosure be?
An adult bearded dragon needs a minimum of 120 gallons (48" x 24" x 24"), though 75 gallons (48" x 18" x 21") is the commonly cited minimum. Larger is always better. They need a temperature gradient from 100-110°F on the basking side to 80-85°F on the cool side, with UVB lighting.
What size tank does a ball python need?
An adult ball python needs at least a 40-gallon tank (36" x 18" x 18"), but a 4' x 2' x 2' enclosure (120 gallons) is the modern recommended minimum. The enclosure must be secure, as ball pythons are notorious escape artists. Provide at least two hides (warm and cool side).
Do reptiles need UVB lighting?
Most diurnal reptiles (bearded dragons, chameleons, iguanas, turtles) absolutely need UVB lighting for vitamin D3 synthesis and calcium metabolism. Without UVB, they develop metabolic bone disease. Some nocturnal species (leopard geckos, ball pythons) can get by without it but still benefit from low-level UVB.
