Room Acoustics Calculator
Calculate
Formula
RT60 = 0.161 x Volume(m3) / Total Absorption. Room Mode = Speed of Sound / (2 x Dimension). Speed of sound ~1130 ft/s. Average absorption coefficient assumed at 0.15 for untreated room.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is RT60?
RT60 is the time it takes for sound to decay by 60 dB (to one millionth of its original intensity). For music studios, an RT60 of 0.3-0.5 seconds is typical. Living rooms are often 0.4-0.8 seconds.
What are room modes?
Room modes are resonant frequencies determined by room dimensions. The first axial mode for each dimension equals the speed of sound divided by twice that dimension. These can cause boomy or uneven bass response.
