Frequently Asked Questions

How big of a tank does a red-eared slider need?
Red-eared sliders need 10 gallons of water per inch of shell length. An adult red-eared slider with a 10-inch shell needs at least a 100-gallon tank. They are one of the larger common pet turtles, so plan for adult size when buying a tank.
Do turtles need a basking area?
Yes, most aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles need a dry basking area where they can completely leave the water. The basking spot should have a heat lamp (85-95F) and UVB lighting. Without proper basking, turtles can develop shell rot and metabolic bone disease.
Can turtles live together?
Some turtle species can cohabitate, but it requires significantly more space (at least 50% more per additional turtle). Turtles can be territorial, so monitor for aggression. Mixing species is generally not recommended.
