Frequently Asked Questions

Who qualifies for the Child Tax Credit?
A qualifying child must be under 17 at the end of the tax year, a U.S. citizen or resident, claimed as your dependent, and must have lived with you for more than half the year. The child must also have a valid Social Security number.
What is the Child Tax Credit phase-out?
The CTC begins to phase out when MAGI exceeds $200,000 (single) or $400,000 (married filing jointly). The credit is reduced by $50 for every $1,000 of income above the threshold.
Is the Child Tax Credit refundable?
Partially. Up to $1,700 per child is refundable as the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) for 2024, meaning you can receive it even if you owe no tax. You must have earned income above $2,500 to qualify for the refundable portion.
