Frequently Asked Questions
How many lights do I need for portraits?
A classic portrait setup uses 2-3 lights: a key light, fill light, and optional hair/rim light. One-light setups with a reflector can also produce excellent results.
Are LED lights better than strobes?
LEDs offer continuous light (great for video and beginners) and lower heat. Strobes provide more power per dollar and freeze motion. Many studios use both.
What light modifiers should I start with?
Start with a large softbox or umbrella for your key light and a reflector for fill. Add a strip box for rim light as your second modifier.
