Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the price before tax?
Divide the total price by (1 + tax rate as a decimal). For example, if the total is $107.50 and the tax rate is 7.5%, the pre-tax price is $107.50 / 1.075 = $100. The tax amount is $107.50 - $100 = $7.50.
Why can't I just subtract the tax percentage from the total?
Because the tax was calculated on the pre-tax price, not the total. If you simply subtract 8% from $108, you get $99.36 - which is wrong. The correct answer is $108 / 1.08 = $100. The difference matters more with higher amounts and tax rates.
What is the average US sales tax rate?
The average combined state and local sales tax rate in the US is about 6.6%. Five states have no sales tax: Alaska (though some local taxes apply), Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. The highest combined rates are in Louisiana (~9.55%), Tennessee (~9.55%), and Arkansas (~9.47%).
