Formula

UK Units = Volume_mL × ABV% / 1000. US Standard Drinks = (Volume_mL × ABV/100 × 0.789) / 14. BAC (Widmark) = (Alcohol_g / (Weight_g × r)) × 100 - 0.015 × Hours. r = 0.68 (male), 0.55 (female).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a standard drink?
In the US, one standard drink contains 14 grams of pure alcohol. This equals about 12 oz of regular beer (5% ABV), 5 oz of wine (12% ABV), or 1.5 oz of distilled spirits (40% ABV). In the UK, one unit equals 10 mL (8g) of pure alcohol.
How long does it take to sober up?
The liver metabolizes alcohol at an average rate of about 0.015% BAC per hour (roughly one standard drink per hour). Nothing speeds this up - not coffee, cold showers, or exercise. Time is the only way to become sober.
What are safe drinking limits?
The US Dietary Guidelines recommend up to 2 standard drinks per day for men and 1 for women. The UK NHS recommends no more than 14 units per week spread over 3+ days. Any amount of alcohol carries some health risk, and the safest level of drinking is none.
