Frequently Asked Questions
When should I start doing kick counts?
Most healthcare providers recommend starting daily kick counts around 28 weeks (third trimester). Choose a time when your baby is usually active (often after meals or in the evening). Count at approximately the same time each day to establish a pattern.
How many kicks should I feel per hour?
Using the 'count to 10' method, you should feel 10 movements (kicks, rolls, jabs, hiccups count too) within 2 hours. Most babies will reach 10 movements in 15-30 minutes. If it consistently takes longer than 2 hours, or you notice a significant change in pattern, contact your provider.
When should I be worried about decreased movement?
Contact your healthcare provider if: you cannot feel 10 movements in 2 hours, there is a sudden or significant decrease from your baby's normal pattern, the baby seems much less active than usual, or you cannot feel any movement. Do not wait until the next day - call your provider right away.
