Formula
S = V × I (apparent power). P = S × PF (real power). Q = S × sin(arccos(PF)) (reactive power). PF = cos(φ).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is power factor?
Power factor is the ratio of real power (W) to apparent power (VA). PF = P/S = cos(φ). A PF of 1 means all power is doing useful work; lower values indicate reactive losses.
What is reactive power?
Reactive power (Q, in VAR) is power stored and released by inductors and capacitors. It does no useful work but increases the current flowing in the system.
